Ibn Shihab (al-Zuhr) reported on the authority of Abu Bakr bin Sulaiman bin Abi Hathmah that the Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم did not make two prostrations when are made when one is doubtful until the people met him. Abu Dawud said; this tradition has also been transmitted by al-Zahidi from al-zuhr from Abu Bakr bin Sulaiman bin Abi HAthman from thre prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم. This version goes: he did not make two prostrations on account of forgetfulness.

حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجُ بْنُ أَبِي يَعْقُوبَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ يَعْنِي ابْنَ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ صَالِحٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏أَنَّ أَبَا بَكْرِ بْنَ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ أَبِي حَثْمَةَ أَخْبَرَهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏أَنَّهُ بَلَغَهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏بِهَذَا الْخَبَرِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ وَلَمْ يَسْجُدِ السَّجْدَتَيْنِ اللَّتَيْنِ تُسْجَدَانِ إِذَا شَكَّ حَتَّى لَقَاهُ النَّاسُ . قَالَ ابْنُ شِهَابٍ:‏‏‏‏ وَأَخْبَرَنِي بِهَذَا الْخَبَرِ سَعِيدُ بْنُ الْمُسَيِّبِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ وَأَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو سَلَمَةَ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَأَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ هِشَامٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَعُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ أَبُو دَاوُد:‏‏‏‏ رَوَاهُ يَحْيَى بْنُ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَعِمْرَانُ بْنُ أَبِي أَنَسٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ،‏‏‏‏وَالْعَلَاءِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَن أَبِيه جَمِيعًا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏بِهَذِهِ الْقِصَّةِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَلَمْ يَذْكُرْ أَنَّهُ سَجَدَ السَّجْدَتَيْنِ . قَالَ أَبُو دَاوُد:‏‏‏‏ وَرَوَاهُ الزُّبَيْدِيُّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ الزُّهْرِيِّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ أَبِي حَثْمَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ فِيهِ:‏‏‏‏ وَلَمْ يَسْجُدْ سَجْدَتَيِ السَّهْوِ .

ابن شہاب سے روایت ہے کہ ابوبکر بن سلیمان بن ابی حثمہ نے انہیں خبر دی کہ انہیں یہ بات پہنچی ہے کہ آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے ان دونوں سجدوں کو جو شک کی وجہ سے کئے جاتے ہیں نہیں کیا یہاں تک کہ لوگوں نے آپ کو ان کی یاددہانی کرائی۔ ابن شہاب کہتے ہیں: اس حدیث کی خبر مجھے سعید بن مسیب نے ابوہریرہ کے واسطے سے دی ہے، نیز مجھے ابوسلمہ بن عبدالرحمٰن، ابوبکر بن حارث بن ہشام اور عبیداللہ بن عبداللہ نے بھی خبر دی ہے۔ ابوداؤد کہتے ہیں: اسے یحییٰ بن ابوکثیر اور عمران بن ابوانس نے ابوسلمہ بن عبدالرحمٰن سے اور علاء بن عبدالرحمٰن نے اپنے والد سے روایت کیا ہے اور ان سبھوں نے اس واقعہ کو ابوہریرہ رضی اللہ عنہ سے روایت کیا ہے لیکن اس میں انہوں نے یہ ذکر نہیں کیا کہ آپ نے دو سجدے کئے۔ ابوداؤد کہتے ہیں: اسے زبیدی نے زہری سے، زہری نے ابوبکر بن سلیمان بن ابی حثمہ سے اور ابوبکر بن سلیمان نے نبی اکرم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم سے روایت کیا ہے، اس میں ہے کہ آپ نے سہو کے دونوں سجدے نہیں کئے۔

Narrated Abu Hurairah: When the Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم finished two rak'ahs of an obligatory prayer, a man asked him: Messenger of Allah, has the prayer been shortened, or have you forgotten? he replied: I did not do all that. The people said: Messenger of Allah, you did that. Therefore, he offered another two rak'ahs or prayer and did not make two prostrations due to forgetfulness. Abu Dawud said: This tradition has also been narrated by Dawud al-Hussain from Abu Sufyan, freed slave of Ibn Abi Ahmad on the authority of Abu Hurairah from the Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم. This version goes: He then made two prostrations while he was sitting after the salutation.

Ibn Umar said: The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم led us in prayer and gave the salutation after two rakahs of prayer. He narrated this tradition like that of Ibn Sirin from Abu Hurairah. This version adds; he gave the salutation and prostrated two prostrations due to forgetfulness.

Imran bin Husain said: The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم gave the salutation at the end of three rakahs in the afternoon prayer, then went into the apartment (according to the version of maslamah). A man called al-Khirbaq who had long arms got up and said ; has the prayer been shortened, Messenger of Allah ? He came out angrily trailing his cloak and said: Is he telling the truth ? they said; Yes. He then prayed that rakah, then gave the salutation, then made two prostrations, then gave the salutation.

Abdullah (bin Masud) said: The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم prayed five rak’ahs in the noon prayer. He was asked whether the prayer had been extended. He asked what they meant by that. The people said: you prayed five rak’ahs. Then he made two prostrations after having given the salutation.
