It was narrated that Bara’ said: “We prayed with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) facing towards Baitul-Maqdis (Jerusalem) for eighteen months, then the Qiblah was changed to the Ka’bah two months after the Prophet (ﷺ) entered Al-Madinah. When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) prayed towards Baitul-Maqdis, he would often lift his face towards the heavens, and Allah knew what was in the heart of His Prophet and how he longed to face the Ka’bah (during prayer). Jibril appeared (in the sky), and the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) started watching him as he was descending between the heavens and the earth, waiting to see what he would bring. Then Allah revealed the words: ‘Verily, We have seen the turning of your face towards the heaven. Surely, We shall turn you to a Qiblah that shall please you, so turn your face in the direction of Al-Masjid Al-Haram (at Makkah). And wherever you people are, turn your faces (during prayer) in that direction.’ [2:144] Then someone came to us and said: ‘The Qiblah has been changed to the Ka’bah.’ We had performed two Rak’ah facing towards Jerusalem. And we were bowing. So we turned around, and we continued our prayer. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘O Jibril! What about our prayer facing towards Baitul- Maqdis?’ Then Allah revealed the words: “And Allah would never make your faith to be lost.” [2:143]

حَدَّثَنَا عَلْقَمَةُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو الدَّارِمِيُّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ عَيَّاشٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاق، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ الْبَرَاءِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ صَلَّيْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَحْوَ بَيْتِ الْمَقْدِسِ ثَمَانِيَةَ عَشَرَ شَهْرًا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَصُرِفَتِ الْقِبْلَةُ إِلَى الْكَعْبَةِ بَعْدَ دُخُولِهِ إِلَى الْمَدِينَةِ بِشَهْرَيْنِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا صَلَّى إِلَى بَيْتِ الْمَقْدِسِ أَكْثَرَ تَقَلُّبَ وَجْهِهِ فِي السَّمَاءِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَعَلِمَ اللَّهُ مِنْ قَلْبِ نَبِيِّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّهُ يَهْوَى الْكَعْبَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَصَعِدَ جِبْرِيلُ فَجَعَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُتْبِعُهُ بَصَرَهُ وَهُوَ يَصْعَدُ بَيْنَ السَّمَاءِ وَالْأَرْضِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏يَنْظُرُ مَا يَأْتِيهِ بِهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ:‏‏‏‏ قَدْ نَرَى تَقَلُّبَ وَجْهِكَ فِي السَّمَاءِ سورة البقرة آية 144، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَأَتَانَا آتٍ فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ إِنَّ الْقِبْلَةَ قَدْ صُرِفَتْ إِلَى الْكَعْبَةِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَقَدْ صَلَّيْنَا رَكْعَتَيْنِ إِلَى بَيْتِ الْمَقْدِسٍ وَنَحْنُ رُكُوعٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَتَحَوَّلْنَا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَبَنَيْنَا عَلَى مَا مَضَى مِنْ صَلَاتِنَا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ:‏‏‏‏ يَا جِبْرِيلُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏كَيْفَ حَالُنَا فِي صَلَاتِنَا إِلَى بَيْتِ الْمَقْدِسِ؟ فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ:‏‏‏‏ وَمَا كَانَ اللَّهُ لِيُضِيعَ إِيمَانَكُمْ سورة البقرة آية 143 .

براء بن عازب رضی اللہ عنہ کہتے ہیں کہ ہم نے رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے ساتھ اٹھارہ مہینے تک بیت المقدس کی جانب منہ کر کے نماز ادا کی، اور آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کی مدینہ تشریف آوری کے دو مہینہ بعد قبلہ خانہ کعبہ کی جانب تبدیل کر دیا گیا، رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم جب بیت المقدس کی جانب نماز پڑھتے تو اکثر اپنا چہرہ آسمان کی جانب اٹھاتے تھے، اللہ تعالیٰ نے اپنے نبی کے دل کا حال جان لیا کہ آپ خانہ کعبہ کی جانب رخ کرنا پسند فرماتے ہیں، ایک بار جبرائیل علیہ السلام اوپر چڑھے، آپ ان کی طرف نگاہ لگائے رہے، وہ آسمان و زمین کے درمیان اوپر چڑھ رہے تھے، آپ انتظار میں تھے کہ جبرائیل علیہ السلام کیا حکم لاتے ہیں، تو اللہ تعالیٰ نے یہ آیت کریمہ نازل فرمائی: «قد نرى تقلب وجهك في السماء» ( سورۃ البقرہ: ۱۴۴ ) ، ہمارے پاس ایک شخص آیا اور اس نے کہا: قبلہ کعبہ کی طرف بدل دیا گیا، ہم دو رکعتیں بیت المقدس کی جانب پڑھ چکے تھے، اور رکوع میں تھے، ہم اسی حالت میں خانہ کعبہ کی جانب پھر گئے، ہم نے اپنی پچھلی نماز پر بنا کیا اور دو رکعتیں اور پڑھیں، تو رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: جبرائیل ہماری ان نماز کا کیا حال ہو گا جو ہم نے بیت المقدس کی جانب پڑھی ہیں ، تو اللہ تعالیٰ نے یہ آیت کریمہ نازل فرمائی: «وما كان الله ليضيع إيمانكم» اللہ تعالیٰ تمہاری نماز کو ضائع کرنے والا نہیں ( سورة البقرة: 143 ) ۱؎۔

It was narrated that Abu Hurairah said: “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘What is between the east and the west is the Qiblah (prayer direction).’”*

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “When anyone of you enters the mosque, let him not sit down until he performs two Rak’ah.”

It was narrated from Abu Qatadah that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “When one of you enters the mosque, let him perform two Rak’ah before he sits down.”

It was narrated from Ma’dan bin Abu Talhah Al-Ya’muri that ‘Umar bin Khattab stood up one Friday to deliver a sermon, or, he delivered a sermon one Friday. He praised Allah, then he said: “O people, you eat two plants that I find are nothing but obnoxious; this garlic and this onion. At the time of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), if a foul odour was detected from a man, I would see him seized by the arm and taken out to Al-Baqi’. Whoever must eat them, let him cook them to death.”

It was narrated that Abu Hurairah said: “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘Whoever eats from this plant; garlic, let him not annoy us with it in this mosque of ours.’”
