It was narrated that Ibn ‘Abbas said: “When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) fell ill with what would be his final illness, he was in the house of ‘Aishah. He said: ‘Call ‘Ali for me.’ ‘Aishah said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, should we call Abu Bakr for you?’ He said: ‘Call him.’ Hafsah said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, should we call ‘Umar for you?’ He said: ‘Call him.’ Ummul-Fadl said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, should we call Al-‘Abbas for you?’ He said: ‘Yes.’ When they had gathered, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) lifted his head, looked and fell silent. ‘Umar said: ‘Get up and leave the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ).’ Then Bilal came to tell him that the time for prayer had come, and he said: ‘Tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer.’ ‘Aishah said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, Abu Bakr is a soft and tender-hearted man, and if he does not see you, he will weep and the people will weep with him. If you tell ‘Umar to lead the people in prayer (that would be better).’ Abu Bakr went out and led the people in prayer, then the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) felt a little better, so he came out, supported by two men, with his feet making lines along the ground. When the people saw him, they said: ‘Subhan-Allah,’ to alert Abu Bakr. He wanted to step back, but the Prophet (ﷺ) gestured him to stay where he was. Then the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came and sat on his right. Abu Bakr stood up and he was following the lead of the Prophet (ﷺ), and the people were following the lead of Abu Bakr. Ibn ‘Abbas said; ‘And the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) started to recite from where Abu Bakr had reached.

حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ إِسْرَائِيلَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاق، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ الْأَرْقَمِ بْنِ شُرَحْبِيلَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ لَمَّا مَرِضَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَرَضَهُ الَّذِي مَاتَ فِيهِ كَانَ فِي بَيْتِ عَائِشَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ ادْعُوا لِي عَلِيًّا ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ:‏‏‏‏ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏نَدْعُو لَكَ أَبَا بَكْرٍ؟، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ ادْعُوهُ ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَتْ حَفْصَةُ:‏‏‏‏ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏نَدْعُو لَكَ عُمَرَ؟ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ ادْعُوهُ ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَتْ أُمُّ الْفَضْلِ:‏‏‏‏ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏نَدْعُو لَكَ الْعَبَّاسَ؟، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ نَعَمْ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَلَمَّا اجْتَمَعُوا رَفَعَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ رَأْسَهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَنَظَرَ فَسَكَتَ ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ عُمَرُ:‏‏‏‏ قُومُوا عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ثُمَّ جَاءَ بِلَالٌ يُؤْذِنُهُ بِالصَّلَاةِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ مُرُوا أَبَا بَكْرٍ فَلْيُصَلِّ بِالنَّاسِ ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ:‏‏‏‏ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏إِنَّ أَبَا بَكْرٍ رَجُلٌ رَقِيقٌ حَصِرٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَمَتَى لَا يَرَاكَ يَبْكِي، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَالنَّاسُ يَبْكُونَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَلَوْ أَمَرْتَ عُمَرَ يُصَلِّي بِالنَّاسِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَخَرَجَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ فَصَلَّى بِالنَّاسِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ فَوَجَدَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي نَفْسِهِ خِفَّةً، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَخَرَجَ يُهَادَى بَيْنَ رَجُلَيْنِ وَرِجْلَاهُ تَخُطَّانِ فِي الْأَرْضِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَلَمَّا رَآهُ النَّاسُ سَبَّحُوا بِأَبِي بَكْرٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَذَهَبَ لِيَسْتَأْخِرَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَأَوْمَأَ إِلَيْهِ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَيْ مَكَانَكَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَجَاءَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَجَلَسَ عَنْ يَمِينِهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَقَامَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَكَانَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ يَأْتَمُّ بِالنَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَالنَّاسُ يَأْتَمُّونَ بِأَبِي بَكْرٍ ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ:‏‏‏‏ وَأَخَذَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِنَ الْقِرَاءَةِ مِنْ حَيْثُ كَانَ بَلَغَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ وَكِيعٌ:‏‏‏‏ وَكَذَا السُّنَّةُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ فَمَاتَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي مَرَضِهِ ذَلِكَ.

عبداللہ بن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما کہتے ہیں کہ جب رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہوسلمل اس بیماری میں مبتلا ہوئے جس میں آپ کی وفات ہوئی، اس وقت آپ عائشہ رضی اللہ عنہا کے گھر میں تھے، آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: علی ( رضی اللہ عنہ ) کو بلاؤ عائشہ رضی اللہ عنہا نے کہا: اللہ کے رسول! کیا ہم ابوبکر رضی اللہ عنہ کو بلا دیں؟ آپ صلی اللہعلیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: انہیں بلاؤ حفصہ رضی اللہ عنہا نے کہا: اللہ کے رسول! کیا عمر رضی اللہ عنہ کو بلا دیں؟ آپ نے فرمایا: بلا دو ، ام الفضل نے کہا: اللہ کے رسول! کیا ہم عباس کو بلا دیں؟ آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: ہاں جب سب لوگ جمع ہو گئے تو رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے اپنا سر اٹھا کر ان لوگوں کی طرف دیکھا، اور خاموش رہے، عمر رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہا: رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے پاس سے اٹھ جاؤ ۱؎، پھر بلال رضی اللہ عنہ آپ کو نماز کی اطلاع دینے کے لیے آئے تو آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: ابوبکر کو حکم دو کہ وہ لوگوں کو نماز پڑھائیں عائشہ رضی اللہ عنہا نے کہا: اللہ کے رسول! ابوبکر رضی اللہ عنہ نرم دل آدمی ہیں، پڑھنے میں ان کی زبان رک جاتی ہے، اور جب آپ کو نہ دیکھیں گے تو رونے لگیں گے، اور لوگ بھی رونا شروع کر دیں گے، لہٰذا اگر آپ عمر رضی اللہ عنہ کو حکم دیں کہ وہ لوگوں کو نماز پڑھائیں ( تو بہتر ہو ) ، لیکن ابوبکر رضی اللہ عنہ نکلے، اور انہوں نے لوگوں کو نماز پڑھائی، پھر رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے اپنی طبیعت میں کچھ ہلکا پن محسوس کیا، تو دو آدمیوں پر ٹیک دے کر تشریف لائے اور آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے دونوں پاؤں زمین پر گھسٹ رہے تھے، جب لوگوں نے آپ کو آتے دیکھا تو ابوبکر رضی اللہ عنہ کو «سبحان الله» کہا، وہ پیچھے ہٹنے لگے تو نبی اکرم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے ان کو اشارہ کیا کہ اپنی جگہ پر رہو، چنانچہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم تشریف آئے، اور ابوبکر رضی اللہ عنہ کے دائیں جانب بیٹھ گئے، اور ابوبکر رضی اللہ عنہ کھڑے رہے، ابوبکر رضی اللہ عنہ نبی اکرم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کی اقتداء کر رہے تھے، اور لوگ ابوبکر رضی اللہ عنہ کی اقتداء کر رہے تھے، عبداللہ بن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما کہتے ہیں کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے قراءت وہاں سے شروع کی جہاں تک ابوبکر رضی اللہ عنہ پہنچے تھے ۲؎۔ وکیع نے کہا: یہی سنت ہے، راوی نے کہا کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کا اسی مرض میں انتقال ہو گیا۔

Hamzah bin Mughirah bin Shu’bah narrated that his father said: “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) lagged behind (on a journey) and we reached the people when ‘Abdur Rahman bin ‘Awf had already led them in one Rak’ah of the prayer. When he realized that the Prophet (ﷺ) was there, he wanted to step back, but the Prophet (ﷺ) gestured to him that he should complete the prayer. He said: ‘You have done well, do the same in the future.’”

It was narrated that ‘Aishah said: “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) fell ill and some of his Companions came to visit him. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) performed prayer while sitting down, and they prayed behind him standing up. He gestured them to sit down, and when he finished he said: ‘The Imam is appointed to be followed. When he bows, then bow; when he stands up again, then stand up, and if he prays sitting down then pray sitting down.’”

It was narrated from Anas bin Malik that the Prophet (ﷺ) fell from his horse and he suffered some lacerations on his right side. We went to visit him and the time for prayer came. He led us in prayer sitting down, and we prayed behind him sitting down. When he finished the prayer he said: “The Imam is appointed to be followed. When he says Allahu Akbar, then say Allahu Akbar; when he bows, then bow; when he says Sami’ Allahu liman hamidah, then say Rabbana wa lakal-hamd; when he prostrates then prostrate; and if he prays sitting down then pray sitting down.”

It was narrated that Abu Hurairah said: “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘The Imam is appointed to be followed. When he says Allahu Akbar, then say Allahu Akbar; when he bows, then bow; when he says Sami’ Allahu liman hamidah, then say Rabbana wa lakal-hamd; when he prostrates then prostrate; if he prays standing, then pray standing, and if he prays sitting down then pray sitting down.”

It was narrated that Jabir said: “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) fell ill, and we prayed behind him while he was sitting down, and Abu Bakr was saying the Takbir so that the people could hear them. He turned to us and saw us standing, so he gestured to us to sit down. When he had said the Salam, he said: ‘You were about to do the action of the Persians and Romans, who remain standing while their kings are seated. Do not do that. Follow the lead of your Imam; if he prays standing, then pray standing, and if he prays sitting down, then pray sitting down.’”

Sa’d bin Tariq said: “I said to my father: ‘O my father! You prayed behind the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and behind Abu Bakr, ‘Umar and ‘Uthman, and behind ‘Ali here in Kufah for about five years. Did they recite Qunut in Fajr?’ He said: ‘O my son! That is an innovation.’”
