Muhammad bin Sirin narrated that Umm ‘Atiyyah said: “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) entered upon us when we were washing his daughter Umm Kulthum. He said: ‘Wash her three or five times, or more than that if you think you need to, with water and lote leaves, and put camphor or a little camphor in (the water) for the last washing. When you have finished, call for me.’ When we finished, we called him, and he gave his waist-wrapper to us and said: ‘Shroud her with it.’”

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَهَّابِ الثَّقَفِيُّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ أَيُّوبَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سِيرِينَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ أُمِّ عَطِيَّةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَتْ:‏‏‏‏ دَخَلَ عَلَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَنَحْنُ نُغَسِّلُ ابْنَتَهُ أُمَّ كُلْثُومٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ اغْسِلْنَهَا ثَلَاثًا أَوْ خَمْسًا أَوْ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏إِنْ رَأَيْتُنَّ ذَلِكَ بِمَاءٍ وَسِدْرٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَاجْعَلْنَ فِي الْآخِرَةِ كَافُورًا أَوْ شَيْئًا مِنْ كَافُورٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَإِذَا فَرَغْتُنَّ فَآذِنَّنِي ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَلَمَّا فَرَغْنَا آذَنَّاهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ فَأَلْقَى إِلَيْنَا حَقْوَهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ أَشْعِرْنَهَا إِيَّاهُ .

ام عطیہ رضی اللہ عنہا کہتی ہیں کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ہمارے پاس آئے، ہم آپ کی بیٹی ام کلثوم رضی اللہ عنہا کو غسل دے رہے تھے، آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: انہیں تین بار، یا پانچ بار، یا اس سے زیادہ اگر تم مناسب سمجھو تو پانی اور بیری کے پتے سے غسل دو ۱؎، اور اخیر بار کے غسل میں کافور یا کہا: تھوڑا سا کافور ملا لو، جب تم غسل سے فارغ ہو جاؤ تو مجھے خبر کرو ، لہٰذا جب ہم غسل سے فارغ ہوئے تو ہم نے آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کو خبر کی، آپ نے اپنا تہبند ہماری طرف پھینکا اور فرمایا: اسے جسم سے متصل کفن میں سب سے نیچے رکھو ۲؎۔

It was narrated from Ayyub who said: “Hafsah narrated to me, from Umm ‘Atiyyah” and it is similar to the Hadith of Muhammad. And in the narration of Hafsah it says: “Wash her an odd number of times.” And: “Wash her face three or five times.” And “Start on her right, with the places washed in ablution.” And it says that Umm ‘Atiyyah said: “And we combed her hair into three braids.”

It was narrated that ‘Ali said: “The Prophet (ﷺ) said to me: ‘Do not show your thigh, and do not look at the thigh of anyone, living or dead.’”

It was narrated from ‘Ali that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Whoever washes a deceased person, shrouds him, embalms him, carries him and offers the funeral prayer for him, and does not disclose what he has seen, he will emerge from his sins as on the day his mother bore him.”
