Translation

It was narrated from Qasim Abu ‘Abdur-Rahman that he heard Mu’awiyah bin Abu Sufyan on the pulpit saying: “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to say from the pulpit, before the month of Ramadan: ‘Fasting will begin on such and such a day, but we are going to start fasting earlier, so whoever wants to start fasting earlier (i.e., in Sha’ban), let him do so, and whoever wants to wait until Ramadan begins, let him do so.’”

حَدَّثَنَا الْعَبَّاسُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ الدِّمَشْقِيُّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا مَرْوَانُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا الْهَيْثَمُ بْنُ حُمَيْدٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا الْعَلَاءُ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنِ الْقَاسِمِ أَبِي عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنَ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏يَقُولُ:‏‏‏‏ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏يَقُولُ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ قَبْلَ شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ:‏‏‏‏ الصِّيَامُ يَوْمَ كَذَا وَكَذَا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَنَحْنُ مُتَقَدِّمُونَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَمَنْ شَاءَ فَلْيَتَقَدَّمْ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَمَنْ شَاءَ فَلْيَتَأَخَّرْ .

معاویہ بن ابی سفیان رضی اللہ عنہما منبر پر کہہ رہے تھے کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم رمضان سے پہلے منبر پر فر مار ہے تھے: روزہ فلاں فلاں دن شروع ہو گا، اور ہم اس سے پہلے سے روزہ رکھنے والے ہیں لہٰذا جس کا جی چاہے پہلے سے روزہ رکھے، اور جس کا جی چا ہے مؤخر کرے ۱؎۔

It was narrated that Umm Salamah said: “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to join Sha’ban to Ramadan.”

It was narrated that Rabi’ah bin Ghaz asked ‘Aishah about the fasting of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). She said: “He used to fast all of Sha’ban, until he joined it to Ramadan.”

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘Do not anticipate Ramadan by fasting one or two days before, except for a man who has a habitual pattern of fasting, in which case let him fast.”

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘When it is the middle of Sha’ban, do not fast until Ramadan comes.”

It was narrated that Ibn ‘Abbas said: “A Bedouin came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said: ‘I have seen the new crescent tonight.’ He said: ‘Do you bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)?’ He said: ‘Yes.’ He said: ‘Get up, O Bilal, and announce to the people that they should fast tomorrow.’”

It was narrated that ‘Umair bin Anas bin Malik said: “My paternal uncles among the Ansar who were among the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) told me: ‘The new crescent of Shawwal was covered with clouods, so we fasted the next day. Then some riders came at the end of the day and testified to the Prophet (ﷺ) that they had seen the new crescent the night before. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) commanded them to break their fast and to go out to offer the ‘Eid prayer the following morning.’”
