It was narrated from Anas bin Malik that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said to Aktham bin Al-Jawn Al-Khuza’i: “O Aktham! Fight alongside people other than your own, it will improve your attitude and make you generous to your companions. O Aktham, the best number of companions is four, the best number of troops on an expedition is four hundred, the best number of an army is four thousand, and twelve thousand will never be overpowered because of their small number.”

حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ عَمَّارٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ مُحَمَّدٌ الصَّنْعَانِيُّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سَلَمَةَ الْعَامِلِيُّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ لِأَكْثَمَ بْنِ الْجَوْنِ الْخُزَاعِيِّ:‏‏‏‏ يَا أَكْثَمُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏اغْزُ مَعَ غَيْرِ قَوْمِكَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏يَحْسُنْ خُلُقُكَ وَتَكْرُمْ عَلَى رُفَقَائِكَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏يَا أَكْثَمُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏خَيْرُ الرُّفَقَاءِ أَرْبَعَةٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَخَيْرُ السَّرَايَا أَرْبَعُ مِائَةٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَخَيْرُ الْجُيُوشِ أَرْبَعَةُ آلَافٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَلَنْ يُغْلَبَ اثْنَا عَشَرَ أَلْفًا مِنْ قِلَّةٍ .

انس بن مالک رضی اللہ عنہ سے روایت ہے کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے اکثم بن جون خزاعی رضی اللہ عنہ سے فرمایا: اکثم! اپنی قوم کے علاوہ دوسرے لوگوں کے ہمراہ جہاد کرو، تمہارے اخلاق اچھے ہو جائیں گے، اور تمہارے ساتھیوں میں تمہاری عزت ہو گی، اکثم! چار ساتھی بہتر ہیں، بہترین دستہ چار سو سپاہیوں کا ہے، اور بہترین لشکر چار ہزار کا ہے، نیز بارہ ہزار کا لشکر کبھی کم تعداد کی وجہ سے مغلوب نہیں ہو گا ۔

It was narrated that Bara’ bin ‘Azib said: “We were talking about how, on the Day of Badr, the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) numbered three hundred ten and something, the same number as the Companions of (Talut) who crossed the river with him, and no one crossed the river with him but a believer.”

It was narrated that Lahi’ah bin ‘Uqbah said: “I heard Abul-Ward, the Companion of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), say: ‘Beware of the troop which, when it meets (the enemy) it flees, and when it takes spoils of war, it steals from it.’”

It was narrated from Qabisah bin Hulb that his father said: “I asked the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) about the food of the Christians and he said: ‘Do not have any doubt about food, (thereby) following the way of the Christians in that.’”

‘Urwah bin Ruwaim Al-Lakhmi narrated that Abu Tha’labah Al-Khushani – whom he said he met and spoke with – said: “I came to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and asked him: ‘O Messenger of Allah! Can we cook in the vessels of the idolaters?’ He said: ‘Do not cook in them.’ I said: ‘What if we need them and cannot find anything else?’ He said: ‘Wash them well, then cook and eat.’”
