It was narrated from Khabbab, concerning the Verse:
“And turn not away those who invoke their Lord, morning and afternoon...” up to His saying: “...and thus become of the unjust.” [6:52] He said: “Aqra’ bin Habis At-Tamimi and ‘Uyainah bin Hisn Al-Fazri came and found the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) with Suhaib, Bilal, ‘Ammar and Khabbab, sitting with some of the believers who were weak (i.e., socially). When they saw them around the Prophet (ﷺ) they looked down on them. They took him aside and said: ‘We want you to sit with us along, so that the ‘Arabs will recognize our superiority. If the delegations of the Arabs come to you we will feel ashamed if the Arabs see us with these slaves. So, when we come to you, make them get up from your presence, then when we have finished, sit with them if you wish.’ He said: ‘Yes.’ They said: ‘Write a document for us (binding you to that).’ So he called for a piece of paper and he called ‘Ali to write, and we were sitting in a corner. Then Jibra’il (as), came down and said: “And turn not away those who invoke their Lord, morning and afternoon seeking His Face. You are accountable for them in nothing, and they are accountable for you in nothing, that you may turn them away, and thus become of the unjust.” [6:52] Then he mentioned Aqra’ bin Habis and ‘Uyaynah bin Hisn, then he said: “Thus We have tried some of them with others, that they might say: ‘Is it these (poor believers) whom Allah has favored from amongst us?’ Does not Allah know best those who are grateful.” [6:53] Then he said: “When those who believe in Our Ayat come to you, say: Salamun ‘Alaykum (peace be on you); your Lord has written (prescribed) mercy for Himself”.” [6:54] He said: “Then we got so close to him that our knees were touching his, and the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was sitting with us. When he wanted to get up, he stood up and left us. Then Allah revealed: “And keep yourself patiently with those who call on their Lord morning and afternoon, seeking His Face; and let not your eyes overlook them,” – and do not sit with the nobles – “desiring the pomp and glitter of the life of the world; and obey not him whose heart We have made heedless of Our remembrance,” – meaning ‘Uyainah and Aqra’ – “and who follows his own lusts, and those affair (deeds) has been lost” [18:28] He said: ‘May they be doomed.’ He said: ‘May ‘Uyainah and Aqra’ be doomed.’ Then he made the parable for them of two men and the parable of this world. Khabbab said: “We used to sit with the Prophet (ﷺ) and if the time came for him to leave, we would get up and leave him, then he would leave.”
حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ يَحْيَى بْنِ سَعِيدٍ الْقَطَّانُ، حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْعَنْقَزِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا أَسْبَاطُ بْنُ نَصْرٍ، عَنْالسُّدِّيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي سَعْدٍ الْأَزْدِيِّ، وَكَانَ قَارِئَ الْأَزْدِ، عَنْ أَبِي الْكَنُودِ، عَنْ خَبَّابٍ، فِي قَوْلِهِ تَعَالَى: وَلا تَطْرُدِ الَّذِينَ يَدْعُونَ رَبَّهُمْ بِالْغَدَاةِ وَالْعَشِيِّ إِلَى قَوْلِهِ فَتَكُونَ مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ سورة الأنعام آية 52، قَالَ: جَاءَ الْأَقْرَعُ بْنُ حَابِسٍ التَّمِيمِيُّ، وَعُيَيْنَةُ بْنُ حِصْنٍ الْفَزَارِيُّ، فَوَجَدَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَعَ صُهَيْبٍ، وَبِلَالٍ، وَعَمَّارٍ، وَخَبَّابٍ، قَاعِدًا فِي نَاسٍ مِنَ الضُّعَفَاءِ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ، فَلَمَّا رَأَوْهُمْ حَوْلَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ حَقَرُوهُمْ، فَأَتَوْهُ فَخَلَوْا بِهِ، وَقَالُوا: إِنَّا نُرِيدُ أَنْ تَجْعَلَ لَنَا مِنْكَ مَجْلِسًا تَعْرِفُ لَنَا بِهِ الْعَرَبُ فَضْلَنَا، فَإِنَّ وُفُودَ الْعَرَبِ تَأْتِيكَ، فَنَسْتَحْيِي أَنْ تَرَانَا الْعَرَبُ مَعَ هَذِهِ الْأَعْبُدِ، فَإِذَا نَحْنُ جِئْنَاكَ فَأَقِمْهُمْ عَنْكَ، فَإِذَا نَحْنُ فَرَغْنَا فَاقْعُدْ مَعَهُمْ إِنْ شِئْتَ، قَالَ: نَعَمْ ، قَالُوا: فَاكْتُبْ لَنَا عَلَيْكَ كِتَابًا، قَالَ: فَدَعَا بِصَحِيفَةٍ وَدَعَا عَلِيًّا لِيَكْتُبَ وَنَحْنُ قُعُودٌ فِي نَاحِيَةٍ، فَنَزَلَ جِبْرَائِيلُ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَام، فَقَالَ: وَلا تَطْرُدِ الَّذِينَ يَدْعُونَ رَبَّهُمْ بِالْغَدَاةِ وَالْعَشِيِّ يُرِيدُونَ وَجْهَهُ مَا عَلَيْكَ مِنْ حِسَابِهِمْ مِنْ شَيْءٍ وَمَا مِنْ حِسَابِكَ عَلَيْهِمْ مِنْ شَيْءٍ فَتَطْرُدَهُمْ فَتَكُونَ مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ سورة الأنعام آية 52 ثُمَّ ذَكَرَ الْأَقْرَعَ بْنَ حَابِسٍ، وَعُيَيْنَةَ بْنَ حِصْنٍ، فَقَالَ: وَكَذَلِكَ فَتَنَّا بَعْضَهُمْ بِبَعْضٍ لِيَقُولُوا أَهَؤُلاءِ مَنَّ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِمْ مِنْ بَيْنِنَا أَلَيْسَ اللَّهُ بِأَعْلَمَ بِالشَّاكِرِينَ سورة الأنعام آية 53 ثُمَّ قَالَ: وَإِذَا جَاءَكَ الَّذِينَ يُؤْمِنُونَ بِآيَاتِنَا فَقُلْ سَلامٌ عَلَيْكُمْ كَتَبَ رَبُّكُمْ عَلَى نَفْسِهِ الرَّحْمَةَ سورة الأنعام آية 54، قَالَ: فَدَنَوْنَا مِنْهُ حَتَّى وَضَعْنَا رُكَبَنَا عَلَى رُكْبَتِهِ، وَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَجْلِسُ مَعَنَا، فَإِذَا أَرَادَ أَنْ يَقُومَ قَامَ وَتَرَ كَنَا، فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ: وَاصْبِرْ نَفْسَكَ مَعَ الَّذِينَ يَدْعُونَ رَبَّهُمْ بِالْغَدَاةِ وَالْعَشِيِّ يُرِيدُونَ وَجْهَهُ وَلا تَعْدُ عَيْنَاكَ عَنْهُمْ سورة الكهف آية 28 وَلَا تُجَالِسْ الْأَشْرَافَ تُرِيدُ زِينَةَ الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا وَلا تُطِعْ مَنْ أَغْفَلْنَا قَلْبَهُ عَنْ ذِكْرِنَا يَعْنِي: عُيَيْنَةَ وَالْأَقْرَعَ وَاتَّبَعَ هَوَاهُ وَكَانَ أَمْرُهُ فُرُطًا سورة الكهف آية 27 ـ 28، قَالَ: هَلَاكًا، قَالَ: أَمْرُ عُيَيْنَةَ، وَالْأَقْرَعِ، ثُمَّ ضَرَبَ لَهُمْ مَثَلَ الرَّجُلَيْنِ، وَمَثَلَ الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا ، قَالَ خَبَّابٌ: فَكُنَّا نَقْعُدُ مَعَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَإِذَا بَلَغْنَا السَّاعَةَ الَّتِي يَقُومُ فِيهَا قُمْنَا وَتَرَكْنَاهُ حَتَّى يَقُومَ .
خباب رضی اللہ عنہ سے روایت ہے وہ «ولا تطرد الذين يدعون ربهم بالغداة والعشي» سے «فتكون من الظالمين» اور ان لوگوں کو اپنے پاس سے مت نکال جو اپنے رب کو صبح و شام پکارتے ہیں ... ( سورة الأنعام: 52 ) کی تفسیر میں کہتے ہیں کہ اقرع بن حابس تمیمی اور عیینہ بن حصن فزاری رضی اللہ عنہما آئے، انہوں نے رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کو صہیب، بلال، عمار، اور خباب رضی اللہ عنہم جیسے کمزور حال مسلمانوں کے ساتھ بیٹھا ہوا پایا، جب انہوں نے ان لوگوں کو نبی اکرم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے چاروں طرف دیکھا تو ان کو حقیر جانا، اور آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے پاس آ کر آپ سے تنہائی میں ملے، اور کہنے لگے: ہم چاہتے ہیں کہ آپ ہمارے لیے ایک الگ مجلس مقرر کریں تاکہ عرب کو ہماری بزرگی اور بڑائی معلوم ہو، آپ کے پاس عرب کے وفود آتے رہتے ہیں، اگر وہ ہمیں ان غلاموں کے ساتھ بیٹھا دیکھ لیں گے تو یہ ہمارے لیے باعث شرم ہے، جب ہم آپ کے پاس آئیں تو آپ ان مسکینوں کو اپنے پاس سے اٹھا دیا کیجئیے، جب ہم چلے جائیں تو آپ چاہیں تو پھر ان کے ساتھ بیٹھ سکتے ہیں، آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: ٹھیک ہے ان لوگوں نے کہا کہ آپ ہمیں اس سلسلے میں ایک تحریر لکھ دیجئیے، آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے ایک کاغذ منگوایا اور علی رضی اللہ عنہ کو لکھنے کے لیے بلایا، ہم ایک طرف بیٹھے تھے کہ جبرائیل علیہ السلام یہ آیت لے کر نازل ہوئے: «ولا تطرد الذين يدعون ربهم بالغداة والعشي يريدون وجهه ما عليك من حسابهم من شيء وما من حسابك عليهم من شيء فتطردهم فتكون من الظالمين» اور ان لوگوں کو اپنے سے دور مت کریں جو اپنے رب کو صبح و شام پکارتے ہیں، وہ اس کی رضا چاہتے ہیں، ان کے حساب کی کوئی ذمے داری تمہارے اوپر نہیں ہے اور نہ تمہارے حساب کی کوئی ذمے داری ان پر ہے ( اگر تم ایسا کرو گے ) تو تم ظالموں میں سے ہو جاؤ گے ) پھر اللہ تعالیٰ نے اقرع بن حابس اور عیینہ بن حصن رضی اللہ عنہما کا ذکر کرتے ہوئے فرمایا: «وكذلك فتنا بعضهم ببعض ليقولوا أهؤلاء من الله عليهم من بيننا أليس الله بأعلم بالشاكرين» اور اسی طرح ہم نے بعض کو بعض کے ذریعے آزمایا تاکہ وہ کہیں: کیا اللہ تعالیٰ نے ہم میں سے انہیں پر احسان کیا ہے، کیا اللہ تعالیٰ شکر کرنے والوں کو نہیں جانتا، ( سورۃ الأنعام: ۵۳ ) پھر فرمایا: «وإذا جاءك الذين يؤمنون بآياتنا فقل سلام عليكم كتب ربكم على نفسه الرحمة» جب تمہارے پاس وہ لوگ آئیں جو ہماری آیات پر ایمان رکھتے ہیں تو کہو: تم پر سلامتی ہو، تمہارے رب نے اپنے اوپر رحم کو واجب کر لیا ہے ( سورة الأنعام: 54 ) ۔ خباب رضی اللہ عنہ کہتے ہیں کہ ( اس آیت کے نزول کے بعد ) ہم آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم سے قریب ہو گئے یہاں تک کہ ہم نے اپنا گھٹنا، آپ کے گھٹنے پر رکھ دیا اور آپ ہمارے ساتھ بیٹھتے تھے، اور جب اٹھنے کا ارادہ کرتے تو کھڑے ہو جاتے، اور ہم کو چھوڑ دیتے ( اس سلسلے میں ) اللہ تعالیٰ نے یہ آیت نازل کی: «واصبر نفسك مع الذين يدعون ربهم بالغداة والعشي يريدون وجهه ولا تعد عيناك عنهم» روکے رکھو اپنے آپ کو ان لوگوں کے ساتھ جو اپنے رب کو یاد کرتے ہیں صبح اور شام، اور اسی کی رضا مندی چاہتے ہیں، اور اپنی نگاہیں ان کی طرف سے مت پھیرو ( سورة الكهف: 28 ) -یعنی مالداروں کے ساتھ مت بیٹھو، تم دنیا کی زندگی کی زینت چاہتے ہو، مت کہا مانو ان لوگوں کا جن کے دل ہم نے اپنی یاد سے غافل کر دئیے ) اس سے مراد اقرع و عیینہ ہیں«واتبع هواه وكان أمره فرطا» انہوں نے اپنی خواہش کی پیروی کی اور ان کا معاملہ تباہ ہو گیا ( سورة الكهف: 28 ) ، یہاں «فرطا» کا معنی بیان کرتے ہوئے خباب رضی اللہ عنہ کہتے ہیں: «هلاكا» اقرع اور عیینہ میں سے ہر ایک کا معاملہ تباہ ہو گیا۔ پھر اللہ تعالیٰ نے ان دو آدمیوں کی مثال اور دنیوی زندگی کی مثال بیان فرمائی، خباب رضی اللہ عنہ کہتے ہیں کہ اس کے بعد ہم نبی اکرم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے ساتھ بیٹھتے تو جب آپ کے کھڑے ہونے کا وقت آتا تو پہلے ہم اٹھتے تب آپ اٹھتے۔

It was narrated that Sa’d said: “This Verse was revealed concerning us six: Myself, Ibn Mas’ud, Suhaib, ‘Ammar, Miqdad and Bilal. The Quraish said to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ): ‘We do not want to join them, send them away.’ Thoughts of that entered the heart of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) as much as Allah willed, then Allah revealed: “And turn not away those who invoke their Lord, morning and afternoon seeking His Face. You are accountable for them in nothing, and they are accountable for you in nothing, that you may turn them away, and thus become of the unjust.” [6:52]
