It was narrated that 'Umar said: We were sitting with the Prophet (ﷺ) when a man came to him whose clothes were intensely white and whose hair was intensely black; no signs of travel could be seen upon him, and none of us recognized him. He sat down facing the Prophet (ﷺ), with his knees touching his, and he put his hands on his thighs, and said: 'O Muhammad, what is Islam?' He said: 'To testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah, and that I am the Messenger of Allah, to establish regular prayer, to pay Zakat, to fast in Ramadan, and to perform Hajj to the House (the Ka'bah).' He said: 'You have spoken the truth.' We were amazed by him: He asked a question, then told him that he had spoken the truth. Then he said: 'O Muhammad, what is Iman faith? He said: 'To believe in Allah, His angels, His Messengers, His books, the Last day, and the Divine Decree (Qadar), both the good of it and the bad of it.' He said' You have spoken the truth.' We were amazed by him. He asked a question, then told him that he had spoken the truth. Then he said: 'O Muhammad, what is Ihsan (right action, goodness, sincerity)? He said: 'To worship Allah as if you see Him, for even though you do not see Him, He sees you.' He asked: When will the Hour be?' He said: 'The one who is being asked about it does not know more than the one who is asking.' He asked: 'Then what are its signs?' he said: 'When the slave woman gives birth to her mistress' (Waki' said: This means when non-Arabs will give birth to Arabs ) 'and when you see barefoot, naked, destitute shepherds competing in constructing tall buildings.' The Prophet (ﷺ) met me three days later and asked me: 'Do you know who that man was? I said 'Allah and his Messenger know best.' He said: 'That was Jibril, who came to you to teach you your religion.'

حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ كَهْمَسِ بْنِ الْحَسَنِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ بُرَيْدَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ يَعْمَرَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنِابْنِ عُمَرَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ عُمَرَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ كُنَّا جُلُوسًا عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَجَاءَ رَجُلٌ شَدِيدُ بَيَاضِ الثِّيَابِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏شَدِيدُ سَوَادِ شَعَرِ الرَّأْسِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏لَا يُرَى عَلَيْهِ أَثَرُ السَّفَرِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَلَا يَعْرِفُهُ مِنَّا أَحَدٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ فَجَلَسَ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَأَسْنَدَ رُكْبَتَهُ إِلَى رُكْبَتِهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَوَضَعَ يَدَيْهِ عَلَى فَخِذَيْهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ثُمَّ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ يَا مُحَمَّدُ مَا الْإِسْلَامُ؟ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ شَهَادَةُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَأَنِّي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَإِقَامُ الصَّلَاةِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَإِيتَاءُ الزَّكَاةِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَصَوْمُ رَمَضَانَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَحَجُّ الْبَيْتِ ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ صَدَقْتَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَعَجِبْنَا مِنْهُ يَسْأَلُهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَيُصَدِّقُهُ،‏‏‏‏ ثُمَّ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ يَا مُحَمَّدُ مَا الْإِيمَانُ؟ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ أَنْ تُؤْمِنَ بِاللَّهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَمَلَائِكَتِهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَرُسُلِهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَكُتُبِهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَالْقَدَرِ خَيْرِهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَشَرِّهِ ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ صَدَقْتَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَعَجِبْنَا مِنْهُ يَسْأَلُهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَيُصَدِّقُهُ،‏‏‏‏ ثُمَّ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ يَا مُحَمَّدُ مَا الْإِحْسَانُ؟ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ أَنْ تَعْبُدَ اللَّهَ كَأَنَّكَ تَرَاهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَإِنَّكَ إِنْ لَا تَرَاهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَإِنَّهُ يَرَاكَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ فَمَتَى السَّاعَةُ؟ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ مَا الْمَسْئُولُ عَنْهَا بِأَعْلَمَ مِنَ السَّائِلِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ فَمَا أَمَارَتُهَا؟ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ أَنْ تَلِدَ الْأَمَةُ رَبَّتَهَا ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ وَكِيعٌ:‏‏‏‏ يَعْنِي:‏‏‏‏ تَلِدُ الْعَجَمُ الْعَرَبَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَأَنْ تَرَى الْحُفَاةَ الْعُرَاةَ الْعَالَةَ رِعَاءَ الشَّاءِ يَتَطَاوَلُونَ فِي الْبِنَاءِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ ثُمَّ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ فَلَقِيَنِي النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بَعْدَ ثَلَاثٍ فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ أَتَدْرِي مَنِ الرَّجُلُ قُلْتُ:‏‏‏‏ اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ ذَاكَ جِبْرِيلُ أَتَاكُمْ يُعَلِّمُكُمْ مَعَالِمَ دِينِكُمْ .

عمر بن الخطاب رضی اللہ عنہ کہتے ہیں کہ ہم نبی اکرم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے پاس بیٹھے ہوئے تھے کہ اچانک ایک شخص آیا، جس کے کپڑے انتہائی سفید اور سر کے بال نہایت کالے تھے، اس پہ سفر کے آثار ظاہر نہیں تھے، اور ہم میں سے کوئی اسے پہچانتا بھی نہ تھا، وہ نبی اکرم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے پاس بیٹھ گیا، اور اپنا گھٹنا آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے گھٹنے سے ملا لیا، اور اپنے دونوں ہاتھ آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کی دونوں ران پر رکھا، پھر بولا: اے محمد! اسلام کیا ہے؟ آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: اس بات کی گواہی دینا کہ اللہ کے سوا کوئی معبود برحق نہیں، اور میں اللہ کا رسول ہوں، نماز قائم کرنا، زکاۃ ادا کرنا، رمضان کے روزے رکھنا، اور خانہ کعبہ کا حج کرنا ، اس نے کہا: آپ نے سچ فرمایا، تو ہمیں تعجب ہوا کہ خود ہی سوال کر رہا ہے، اور خود ہی جواب کی تصدیق بھی۔ پھر اس نے کہا: اے محمد! ایمان کیا ہے؟ آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: ایمان یہ ہے کہ تم اللہ اور اس کے فرشتوں، اس کے رسولوں، اس کی کتابوں، یوم آخرت، اور بھلی بری تقدیر پر ایمان رکھو ، اس نے کہا: آپ نے سچ فرمایا، تو ہمیں تعجب ہوا کہ خود ہی سوال کر رہا ہے، اور خود ہی جواب کی تصدیق بھی۔ پھر اس نے کہا: اے محمد! احسان کیا ہے؟ آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: تم اللہ کی عبادت اس طرح کرو گویا کہ تم اس کو دیکھ رہے ہو، اگر تم اس کو نہیں دیکھتے ہو تو یقین رکھو کہ وہ تم کو ضرور دیکھ رہا ہے ۔ پھر اس نے پوچھا: قیامت کب آئے گی؟ آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: جس سے پوچھ رہے ہو، وہ پوچھنے والے سے زیادہ نہیں جانتا ۱؎۔ پھر اس نے پوچھا: اس کی نشانیاں کیا ہیں؟ آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: لونڈی اپنے مالکن کو جنے گی ( وکیع راوی حدیث نے کہا: یعنی عجمی عورتیں عرب کو جنیں گی ) ۲؎ اور تم ننگے پاؤں، ننگے بدن، فقیر و محتاج بکریوں کے چرواہوں کو دیکھو گے کہ وہ بڑی بڑی کوٹھیوں اور محلات کے بنانے میں فخر و مسابقت سے کام لیں گے ۔ راوی کہتے ہیں: پھر عمر رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہا کہ نبی اکرم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم مجھ سے تین دن کے بعد ملے، آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: کیا تم جانتے ہو وہ شخص کون تھا؟ ، میں نے کہا: اللہ اور اس کے رسول بہتر جانتے ہیں، آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: یہ جبرائیل تھے جو تمہیں تمہارے دین کی اہم اور بنیادی باتیں سکھانے آئے تھے ۳؎۔

It was narrated that Abu Hurairah said: One day the Prophet (ﷺ) appeared among the people. A man came to him and said: 'O messenger of Allah, what is Iman (faith)?' He said: 'To believe in Allah, His angels, His books, His Messengers and the meeting with, and to believe in the Final Resurrection.' He said: 'O Messenger of Allah, what is Islam?' He said: 'To worship Allah (alone) and not to associate anything with Him; to establish the prescribed prayers, to pay the obligatory Zakat, and to fast Ramadan.' He said: 'O Messenger of Allah, what is Ihsan? He said: 'To worship Allah as if you see Him, for even though you do not see Him, He sees you.' He said: O Messenger of Allah, when will the Hour be?' He said: 'The one who is being asked about it does not know more than the one who is asking. But I will tell you about its signs. When the slave woman gives birth to her mistress that is one of its signs. When the shepherds compete in constructing tall buildings that is one of its signs. And there are five things which no one knows except Allah.' Then the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) recited the Verse: Verily, Allah, with Him (Alone) is the knowledge of the Hour, He sends down the rain, and knows that which is in the wombs. No person knows what he will earn tomorrow, and no person knows in what land he will die. Verily, Allah is All-Knower, All-Aware (of things).

It was narrated that 'Ali bin Abu Talib said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'Faith is knowledge in the heart, words on the tongue and action with the physical faculties. (limbs of the body).' (Maudu')

It was narrated from Anas bin Malik that: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'None of you truly believes until he loves for his brother or he said for his neighbor, what he loves for himself.

It was narrated that Anas bin Malik said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'None of you truly believes until I am more beloved to him than his child, his father and all the people.'

It was narrated that Abu Hurairah said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'By the One in whose Hand is my soul! You will not enter Paradise until you believe, and you will not (truly) believe until you love one another. Shall I not tell you of something which, if you do it, you will love one another? Spread the greetings of Salam amongst yourselves.'
