Narrated Abu Musa al-Ashari: Hittan ibn Abdullah ar-Ruqashi said: Abu Musa al-Ashari led us in prayer. When he sat at the end of his prayer, one of the people said: Prayer has been established by virtue and purity. When Abu Musa returned (from his prayer or finished his prayer), he gave his attention to the people, and said: Which of you is the speaker of such and such words? The people remained silent. Which of you is the speaker of such and such words? The people remained silent. He said: You might have said them, Hittan. He replied: I did not say them. I was afraid you might punish me. One of the people said: I said them and I did not intend by them (anything) except good. Abu Musa said: Do you not know how you utter (them) in your prayer? The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم addressed us, and taught us and explained to us our way of doing and taught us our prayer. He said: When you pray a (congregational) prayer, straighten your rows, then one of you should lead you in prayer. When he says the takbir (Allah is Most Great), say the takbir, and when he recites verses Not of those upon whom is Thy anger, nor of those who err (i. e. the end of Surah i. ), say Amin; Allah will favour you. When he says Allah is most great, and bows, say Allah is most great and bow, for the imam will bow before you, and will raise (his head) before you. The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم said: This is for that. When he says Allah listens to the one who praises Him, say: O Allah, our Lord, to Thee be praise, Allah be praised, Allah will listen to you, for Allah, the Exalted, said by the tongue of His Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم: Allah listens to the one who praises Him. When he says Allah is most great and prostrates, say: Allah is most great and prostrate, for the imam prostrates before you and raises his head before you. The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم said: This is for that. When he sits, each one of you should say The adorations of the tongue, all good things, and acts of worship are due to Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and Allah's mercy and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon Allah's upright servants. I testify that there is no god but Allah, and I testify that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger. This version of Ahmad does not mention the words and His blessings nor the phrase and I testify ; instead, it has the words that Muhammad.

حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ عَوْنٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ قَتَادَةَ. ح وحَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ حَنْبَلٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَاهِشَامٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ يُونُسَ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ حِطَّانَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الرَّقَاشِيِّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ صَلَّى بِنَا أَبُو مُوسَى الْأَشْعَرِيُّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَلَمَّا جَلَسَ فِي آخِرِ صَلَاتِهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْقَوْمِ:‏‏‏‏ أُقِرَّتِ الصَّلَاةُ بِالْبِرِّ وَالزَّكَاةِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَلَمَّا انْفَتَلَ أَبُو مُوسَى أَقْبَلَ عَلَى الْقَوْمِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ أَيُّكُمُ الْقَائِلُ كَلِمَةَ كَذَا وَكَذَا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ فَأَرَمَّ الْقَوْمُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ أَيُّكُمُ الْقَائِلُ كَلِمَةَ كَذَا وَكَذَا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَأَرَمَّ الْقَوْمُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ فَلَعَلَّكَ يَا حِطَّانُ أَنْتَ قُلْتَهَا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ مَا قُلْتُهَا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَلَقَدْ رَهِبْتُ أَنْ تَبْكَعَنِي بِهَا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْقَوْمِ:‏‏‏‏ أَنَا قُلْتُهَا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَمَا أَرَدْتُ بِهَا إِلَّا الْخَيْرَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ أَبُو مُوسَى:‏‏‏‏ أَمَا تَعْلَمُونَ كَيْفَ تَقُولُونَ فِي صَلَاتِكُمْ ؟ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ خَطَبَنَا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَعَلَّمَنَا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَبَيَّنَ لَنَا سُنَّتَنَا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَعَلَّمَنَا صَلَاتَنَا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ إِذَا صَلَّيْتُمْ فَأَقِيمُوا صُفُوفَكُمْ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ثُمَّ لِيَؤُمَّكُمْ أَحَدُكُمْ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَإِذَا كَبَّرَ فَكَبِّرُوا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَإِذَا قَرَأَ غَيْرِ الْمَغْضُوبِ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلا الضَّالِّينَ سورة الفاتحة آية 7، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقُولُوا:‏‏‏‏ آمِينَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏يُحِبُّكُمُ اللَّهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَإِذَا كَبَّرَ وَرَكَعَ فَكَبِّرُوا وَارْكَعُوا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَإِنَّ الْإِمَامَ يَرْكَعُ قَبْلَكُمْ وَيَرْفَعُ قَبْلَكُمْ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ:‏‏‏‏ فَتِلْكَ بِتِلْكَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَإِذَا قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ سَمِعَ اللَّهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقُولُوا:‏‏‏‏ اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّنَا وَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏يَسْمَعُ اللَّهُ لَكُمْ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ تَعَالَى قَالَ عَلَى لِسَانِ نَبِيِّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ:‏‏‏‏ سَمِعَ اللَّهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَإِذَا كَبَّرَ وَسَجَدَ فَكَبِّرُوا وَاسْجُدُوا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَإِنَّ الْإِمَامَ يَسْجُدُ قَبْلَكُمْ وَيَرْفَعُ قَبْلَكُمْ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ:‏‏‏‏ فَتِلْكَ بِتِلْكَ. فَإِذَا كَانَ عِنْدَ الْقَعْدَةِ فَلْيَكُنْ مِنْ أَوَّلِ قَوْلِ أَحَدِكُمْ أَنْ يَقُولَ التَّحِيَّاتُ الطَّيِّبَاتُ الصَّلَوَاتُ لِلَّهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏السَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى عِبَادِ اللَّهِ الصَّالِحِينَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏لَمْ يَقُلْ أَحْمَدُ:‏‏‏‏ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَلَا قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ وَأَشْهَدُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا.

حطان بن عبداللہ رقاشی کہتے ہیں کہ ابوموسیٰ اشعری رضی اللہ عنہ نے ہمیں نماز پڑھائی تو جب وہ اخیر نماز میں بیٹھنے لگے تو لوگوں میں سے ایک شخص نے کہا: نماز نیکی اور پاکی کے ساتھ مقرر کی گئی ہے تو جب ابوموسیٰ اشعری نماز سے فارغ ہوئے تو لوگوں کی جانب متوجہ ہوئے اور پوچھا ( ابھی ) تم میں سے کس نے اس اس طرح کی بات کی ہے؟ راوی کہتے ہیں: تو لوگ خاموش رہے، پھر انہوں نے پوچھا: تم میں سے کس نے اس اس طرح کی بات کی ہے؟ راوی کہتے ہیں: لوگ پھر خاموش رہے تو ابوموسیٰ اشعری نے کہا: حطان! شاید تم نے یہ بات کہی ہے؟ انہوں نے کہا: میں نے نہیں کہی ہے اور میں تو ڈرتا ہوں کہ کہیں آپ مجھے ہی سزا نہ دے ڈالیں۔ راوی کہتے ہیں: پھر ایک دوسرے شخص نے کہا: میں نے کہی ہے اور میری نیت خیر ہی کی تھی، اس پر ابوموسیٰ رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہا: کیا تم لوگ نہیں جانتے کہ تم اپنی نماز میں کیا کہو؟ بیشک رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے ہمیں خطبہ دیا اور ہم کو سکھایا اور ہمیں ہمارا طریقہ بتایا اور ہمیں ہماری نماز سکھائی اور فرمایا: جب تم نماز پڑھنے کا قصد کرو، تو اپنی صفوں کو درست کرو، پھر تم میں سے کوئی شخص تمہاری امامت کرے تو جب وہ تکبیر کہے تو تم تکبیر کہو اور جب وہ «غير المغضوب عليهم ولا الضالين» کہے تو تم آمین کہو، اللہ تم سے محبت فرمائے گا ۱؎ اور جب وہ «الله أكبر» کہے اور رکوع کرے تو تم بھی «الله أكبر» کہو اور رکوع کرو کیونکہ امام تم سے پہلے رکوع میں جائے گا اور تم سے پہلے سر اٹھائے گا رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: تو یہ اس کے برابر ہو گیا ۲؎ اور جب وہ «سمع الله لمن حمده»کہے تو تم «اللهم ربنا لك الحمد» کہو، اللہ تمہاری سنے گا، کیونکہ اللہ تعالیٰ نے اپنے نبی کی زبانی ارشاد فرمایا ہے «سمع الله لمن حمده»یعنی اللہ تعالیٰ نے اس شخص کی سن لی جس نے اس کی تعریف کی، اور جب تکبیر کہے اور سجدہ کرے تو تم بھی تکبیر کہو اور سجدہ کرو کیونکہ امام تم سے پہلے سجدہ کرے گا اور تم سے پہلے سر اٹھائے گا ۔ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: تو یہ اس کے برابر ہو جائے گا، پھر جب تم میں سے کوئی قعدہ میں بیٹھے تو اس کی سب سے پہلی بات یہ کہے: «التحيات الطيبات الصلوات لله السلام عليك أيها النبي ورحمة الله وبركاته السلام علينا وعلى عباد الله الصالحين أشهد أن لا إله إلا الله وأشهد أن محمدا عبده ورسوله» آداب، بندگیاں، پاکیزہ خیرات، اور صلاۃ و دعائیں اللہ ہی کے لیے ہیں، اے نبی! آپ پر سلام، اور اللہ کی رحمت اور اس کی برکتیں نازل ہوں، اور سلام ہو ہم پر اور اللہ کے تمام نیک و صالح بندوں پر، میں گواہی دیتا ہوں کہ اللہ کے سوا کوئی معبود برحق نہیں، اور میں گواہی دیتا ہوں کہ محمد صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم اس کے بندے اور رسول ہیں ۔ احمد نے اپنی روایت میں: «وبركاته» کا لفظ نہیں کہا ہے اور نہ ہی «أشهد» کہا بلکہ «وأن محمدا» کہا ہے۔

Ibn Abbas said: The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم used to teach us the tashahhud as he would teach us the Quran, and would say: The blessed adoration of the tongue, acts of worship (and) all good things are due to Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and Allah’s mercy and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon Allah’s upright servants. I testify that there is no god but Allah, and I testify that Muhammad is Allah’s Messenger صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم.

Narrated Samurah ibn Jundub: The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم commanded us (to recite) when we sit in the middle of the prayer or at its end before the salutation: The adorations of the tongue, all good things, acts of worship, and the Kingdom are due to Allah. Then give salutation to the right side; then salute your reciter (i. e. the imam) and yourselves. Abu Dawud said: Sulaiman bin Musa hails from Kufah and he lives in Damascus. Abu Dawud said: This collection of traditions indicates that al-Hasan (al-Basri) heard traditions from Samurah (b. Jundub).

Kaab bin Ujrah said: We said or the people said: Messenger of Allah, you have commanded us to invoke blessing on you and to salute you. As regards salutation we have already learnt it. How should we invoke blessing? He said: Say: “O Allah, bless Muhammad and Muhammad’s family as Thou didst bless Abraham and Abraham’s family. O Allah, grant favours to Muhammad and Muhammad’s family as Thou didst grant favours to Abraham; Thou art indeed praiseworthy and glorious.

Abu Dawud said: This tradition has been narrated by al-Zubair bin Adi as narrated by Mis’ar, except that his version goes: As Thou didst bless Abraham’s family. Thou art indeed praiseworthy and glorious. And grant favours to Muhammad. He then narrated the tradition in full.

Abu Humaid al-Said said: Some people asked: Messenger of Allah, how should we invoke blessings on you? He said: Say, ” O Allah, bless Muhammad, his wives and his off springs, as Thou didst bless Abraham’s family, and grant favours to Muhammad’s family, his wives and off springs, as Thou didst grant favours to Abraham’s family. Thou art indeed praiseworthy and glorious.
