It was narrated that Salim bin ‘Ubaid said: “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) fainted when he was sick, then he woke up and said: ‘Has the time for prayer come?’ They said: ‘Yes.’ He said: ‘Tell Bilal to call the Adhan, and tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer.’ Then he fainted, then he woke up and said: ‘Has the time for prayer come?’ They said: ‘Yes.’ He said: ‘Tell Bilal to call the Adhan, and tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer.’ Then he fainted, then he woke up and said: ‘Has the time for prayer come?’ They said: ‘Yes.’ He said: ‘Tell Bilal to call the Adhan, and tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer.’ ‘Aishah said: ‘My father is a tender-hearted man, and if he stands in that place he will weep and will not be able to do it. If you told someone else to do it (that would be better).’ Then he fainted, then woke up and said: ‘Tell Bilal to call the Adhan, and tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer. You are (like) the female companions of Yusuf.’ So Bilal was told to call the Adhan and he did so, and Abu Bakr was told to lead the people in prayer, and he did so. Then the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) felt a little better, and he said: ‘Find me someone I can lean on.’ Barirah and another man came, and he leaned on them. When Abu Bakr saw him, he started to step back, but (the Prophet (ﷺ)) gestured him to stay where he was. Then the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came and sat beside Abu Bakr, until Abu Bakr finished praying. Then the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) passed away.”

حَدَّثَنَا نَصْرُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ الْجَهْضَمِيُّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏أَنْبَأَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ دَاوُدَ مِنْ كِتَابِهِ فِي بَيْتِهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ سَلَمَةُ بْنُ نُبَيْطٍ:‏‏‏‏ أَنْبَأَنَا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ نُعَيْمِ بْنِ أَبِي هِنْدٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ نُبَيْطِ بْنِ شَرِيطٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ سَالِمِ بْنِ عُبَيْدٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ أُغْمِيَ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي مَرَضِهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ثُمَّ أَفَاقَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ أَحَضَرَتِ الصَّلَاةُ؟ ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالُوا:‏‏‏‏ نَعَمْ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ مُرُوا بِلَالًا فَلْيُؤَذِّنْ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَمُرُوا أَبَا بَكْرٍ فَلْيُصَلِّ بِالنَّاسِ ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ثُمَّ أُغْمِيَ عَلَيْهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَأَفَاقَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ أَحَضَرَتِ الصَّلَاةُ؟ ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالُوا:‏‏‏‏ نَعَمْ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ مُرُوا بِلَالًا فَلْيُؤَذِّنْ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَمُرُوا أَبَا بَكْرٍ فَلْيُصَلِّ بِالنَّاسِ ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ثُمَّ أُغْمِيَ عَلَيْهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَأَفَاقَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ أَحَضَرَتِ الصَّلَاةُ؟ ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالُوا:‏‏‏‏ نَعَمْ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ مُرُوا بِلَالًا فَلْيُؤَذِّنْ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَمُرُوا أَبَا بَكْرٍ فَلْيُصَلِّ بِالنَّاسِ ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ:‏‏‏‏ إِنَّ أَبِي رَجُلٌ أَسِيفٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَإِذَا قَامَ ذَلِكَ الْمَقَامَ يَبْكِي لَا يَسْتَطِيعُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَلَوْ أَمَرْتَ غَيْرَهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ثُمَّ أُغْمِيَ عَلَيْهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَأَفَاقَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ مُرُوا بِلَالًا فَلْيُؤَذِّنْ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَمُرُوا أَبَا بَكْرٍ فَلْيُصَلِّ بِالنَّاسِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَإِنَّكُنَّ صَوَاحِبُ يُوسُفَ أَوْ صَوَاحِبَاتُ يُوسُفَ ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ فَأُمِرَ بِلَالٌ فَأَذَّنَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَأُمِرَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ فَصَلَّى بِالنَّاسِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ثُمَّ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَجَدَ خِفَّةً، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ انْظُرُوا لِي مَنْ أَتَّكِئُ عَلَيْهِ ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَجَاءَتْ بَرِيرَةُ وَرَجُلٌ آخَرُ فَاتَّكَأَ عَلَيْهِمَا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَلَمَّا رَآهُ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ذَهَبَ لِيَنْكِصَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَأَوْمَأَ إِلَيْهِ أَنِ اثْبُتْ مَكَانَكَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ ثُمَّ جَاءَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ حَتَّى جَلَسَ إِلَى جَنْبِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ حَتَّى قَضَى أَبُو بَكْرٍ صَلَاتَهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ثُمَّ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قُبِضَ ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ أَبُو عَبْد اللَّهِ:‏‏‏‏ هَذَا حَدِيثٌ غَرِيبٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏لَمْ يُحَدِّثْ بِهِ غَيْرُ نَصْرِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ.

سالم بن عبید رضی اللہ عنہ کہتے ہیں کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم پر مرض الموت میں بے ہوشی طاری ہوئی، پھر ہوش میں آئے، تو آپ نے پوچھا: کیا نماز کا وقت ہو گیا؟ لوگوں نے کہا: جی ہاں، تو آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: بلال کو حکم دو کہ وہ اذان دیں، اور ابوبکر کو حکم دو کہ وہ لوگوں کو نماز پڑھائیں ، پھر آپ پر بے ہوشی طاری ہوئی، پھر ہوش آیا، تو آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: کیا نماز کا وقت ہو گیا؟ لوگوں نے کہا: جی ہاں، تو آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: بلال کو حکم دو کہ وہ اذان دیں، اور ابوبکر کو حکم دو کہ وہ لوگوں کو نماز پڑھائیں پھر آپ پر بے ہوشی طاری ہوئی، پھر ہوش آیا، تو فرمایا: کیا نماز کا وقت ہو گیا؟ صحابہ کرام رضی اللہ عنہم نے کہا: جی ہاں، تو آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: بلال کو حکم دو کہ وہ اذان دیں، اور ابوبکر سے کہو کہ وہ لوگوں کو نماز پڑھائیں تو عائشہ رضی اللہ عنہا نے کہا: میرے والد نرم دل آدمی ہیں، جب اس جگہ پر کھڑے ہوں گے تو رونے لگیں گے، نماز نہ پڑھا سکیں گے، اگر آپ ان کے علاوہ کسی اور کو حکم دیتے ( تو بہتر ہوتا ) ! پھر آپ پر بے ہوشی طاری ہو گئی، پھر ہوش آیا، تو فرمایا: بلال کو حکم دو کہ وہ اذان کہیں، اور ابوبکر سے کہو کہ وہ لوگوں کو نماز پڑھائیں، تم تو یوسف ( علیہ السلام ) کے ساتھ والیوں جیسی ہو بلال رضی اللہ عنہ کو حکم دیا گیا، تو انہوں نے اذان دی، اور ابوبکر رضی اللہ عنہ سے کہا گیا تو انہوں نے لوگوں کو نماز پڑھائی، پھر رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے طبیعت میں کچھ ہلکا پن محسوس کیا تو فرمایا: دیکھو کسی کو لاؤ جس پر میں ٹیک دے کر ( مسجد جا سکوں ) بریرہ رضی اللہ عنہا اور ایک شخص آئے تو آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے ان دونوں پر ٹیک لگایا، جب ابوبکر رضی اللہ عنہ نے آپ کی آمد محسوس کی تو پیچھے ہٹنے لگے، آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے انہیں اشارہ کیا کہ اپنی جگہ پر رہو پھر رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم آئے، اور ابوبکر رضی اللہ عنہ کے پہلو میں بیٹھ گئے یہاں تک کہ ابوبکر رضی اللہ عنہ نے اپنی نماز پوری کی، پھر اس کے بعد رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کا انتقال ہو گیا۔ ابوعبداللہ ابن ماجہ کہتے ہیں کہ یہ حدیث غریب ہے، نصر بن علی کے علاوہ کسی اور نے اس کو روایت نہیں کیا ہے۔

It was narrated that Ibn ‘Abbas said: “When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) fell ill with what would be his final illness, he was in the house of ‘Aishah. He said: ‘Call ‘Ali for me.’ ‘Aishah said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, should we call Abu Bakr for you?’ He said: ‘Call him.’ Hafsah said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, should we call ‘Umar for you?’ He said: ‘Call him.’ Ummul-Fadl said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, should we call Al-‘Abbas for you?’ He said: ‘Yes.’ When they had gathered, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) lifted his head, looked and fell silent. ‘Umar said: ‘Get up and leave the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ).’ Then Bilal came to tell him that the time for prayer had come, and he said: ‘Tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer.’ ‘Aishah said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, Abu Bakr is a soft and tender-hearted man, and if he does not see you, he will weep and the people will weep with him. If you tell ‘Umar to lead the people in prayer (that would be better).’ Abu Bakr went out and led the people in prayer, then the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) felt a little better, so he came out, supported by two men, with his feet making lines along the ground. When the people saw him, they said: ‘Subhan-Allah,’ to alert Abu Bakr. He wanted to step back, but the Prophet (ﷺ) gestured him to stay where he was. Then the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came and sat on his right. Abu Bakr stood up and he was following the lead of the Prophet (ﷺ), and the people were following the lead of Abu Bakr. Ibn ‘Abbas said; ‘And the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) started to recite from where Abu Bakr had reached.

Hamzah bin Mughirah bin Shu’bah narrated that his father said: “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) lagged behind (on a journey) and we reached the people when ‘Abdur Rahman bin ‘Awf had already led them in one Rak’ah of the prayer. When he realized that the Prophet (ﷺ) was there, he wanted to step back, but the Prophet (ﷺ) gestured to him that he should complete the prayer. He said: ‘You have done well, do the same in the future.’”

It was narrated that ‘Aishah said: “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) fell ill and some of his Companions came to visit him. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) performed prayer while sitting down, and they prayed behind him standing up. He gestured them to sit down, and when he finished he said: ‘The Imam is appointed to be followed. When he bows, then bow; when he stands up again, then stand up, and if he prays sitting down then pray sitting down.’”

It was narrated from Anas bin Malik that the Prophet (ﷺ) fell from his horse and he suffered some lacerations on his right side. We went to visit him and the time for prayer came. He led us in prayer sitting down, and we prayed behind him sitting down. When he finished the prayer he said: “The Imam is appointed to be followed. When he says Allahu Akbar, then say Allahu Akbar; when he bows, then bow; when he says Sami’ Allahu liman hamidah, then say Rabbana wa lakal-hamd; when he prostrates then prostrate; and if he prays sitting down then pray sitting down.”

It was narrated that Abu Hurairah said: “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘The Imam is appointed to be followed. When he says Allahu Akbar, then say Allahu Akbar; when he bows, then bow; when he says Sami’ Allahu liman hamidah, then say Rabbana wa lakal-hamd; when he prostrates then prostrate; if he prays standing, then pray standing, and if he prays sitting down then pray sitting down.”

It was narrated that Jabir said: “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) fell ill, and we prayed behind him while he was sitting down, and Abu Bakr was saying the Takbir so that the people could hear them. He turned to us and saw us standing, so he gestured to us to sit down. When he had said the Salam, he said: ‘You were about to do the action of the Persians and Romans, who remain standing while their kings are seated. Do not do that. Follow the lead of your Imam; if he prays standing, then pray standing, and if he prays sitting down, then pray sitting down.’”
