It was narrated from ‘Abdullah bin ‘Amr that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “The most beloved fast to Allah is the fast of Dawud, for he used to fast one day and not the next. And the most beloved of prayer to Allah is the prayer of Dawud; he used to sleep half of the night, pray one-third of the night and sleep one-sixth of the night.”
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو إِسْحَاق الشَّافِعِيُّ إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْعَبَّاسِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ دِينَارٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ سَمِعْتُ عَمْرَو بْنَ أَوْسٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عَمْرٍو، ‏‏‏‏‏‏يَقُولُ:‏‏‏‏ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ:‏‏‏‏ أَحَبُّ الصِّيَامِ إِلَى اللَّهِ صِيَامُ دَاوُدَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَإِنَّهُ كَانَ يَصُومُ يَوْمًا وَيُفْطِرُ يَوْمًا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَأَحَبُّ الصَّلَاةِ إِلَى اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ صَلَاةُ دَاوُدَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏كَانَ يَنَامُ نِصْفَ اللَّيْلِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَيُصَلِّي ثُلُثَهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَيَنَامُ سُدُسَهُ .
عمرو بن اوس کہتے ہیں کہ   میں نے عبداللہ بن عمرو رضی اللہ عنہما کو کہتے سنا ہے کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: اللہ تعالیٰ کے نزدیک روزوں میں سب سے زیادہ پسندیدہ روزہ داود علیہ السلام کا روزہ ہے، وہ ایک دن روزہ رکھتے اور ایک دن نہیں رکھتے تھے، اور اللہ تعالیٰ کے نزدیک سب سے زیادہ پسندیدہ نماز داود علیہ السلام کی نماز ہے، آپ آدھی رات سوتے تھے، پھر تہائی رات تک نماز پڑھتے تھے، پھر رات کے چھٹے حصہ میں سو رہتے ۔

It was narrated that Abu Qatadah said: “Umar bin Khattab said: ‘O Messenger of Allah! What about a person who fasts two days and does not fast one day?’ He said: ‘Is anyone able to do that?’ He said: ‘O Messenger of Allah! What about a person who fasts one day and not the next?’ He said: ‘That is the fast of Dawud.’ He said: ‘What about a man who fasts one day and does not fast the next two days?’ He said: ‘I wish that I were given the ability to do that.’”
