It was narrated from Ibn ‘Umar that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to stop at ‘Arafat in Namirah Valley. When Hajjaj killed Ibn Zubair, he sent word to Ibn ‘Umar asking: “At what hour did the Prophet (ﷺ) go out on this day?” He said: “When that time comes, we will go out.” So Hajjah sent a man to watch for the time when they went out. When Ibn ‘Umar wanted to set out, he said: “Has the sun passed the zenith?” They said: “It has not passed the zenith yet.” So he sat down. Then he said: “Has the sun passed the zenith?” They said: “It has not passed the zenith yet.” So he sat down. Then he said: “Has the sun passed the zenith?” They said: “Yes.” When they said that it had passed the zenith, he set out.

حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ وَعَمْرُو بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَا:‏‏‏‏ حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏أَنْبَأَنَا نَافِعُ بْنُ عُمَرَ الْجُمَحِيُّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ حَسَّانَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ ابْنِ عُمَرَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ يَنْزِلُ بِعَرَفَةَ فِي وَادِي نَمِرَةَ. (حديث مرفوع) (حديث موقوف) قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ فَلَمَّا قَتَلَ الْحَجَّاجُ ابْنَ الزُّبَيْرِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏أَرْسَلَ إِلَى ابْنِ عُمَرَ:‏‏‏‏ أَيَّ سَاعَةٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَرُوحُ فِي هَذَا الْيَوْمِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ إِذَا كَانَ ذَلِكَ رُحْنَا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَأَرْسَلَ الْحَجَّاجُ رَجُلًا يَنْظُرُ أَيَّ سَاعَةٍ يَرْتَحِلُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَلَمَّا أَرَادَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ أَنْ يَرْتَحِلَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ أَزَاغَتِ الشَّمْسُ؟، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالُوا:‏‏‏‏ لَمْ تَزِغْ بَعْدُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَجَلَسَ ثُمَّ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ أَزَاغَتِ الشَّمْسُ؟، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالُوا:‏‏‏‏ لَمْ تَزِغْ بَعْدُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَجَلَسَ ثُمَّ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ أَزَاغَتِ الشَّمْسُ؟، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالُوا:‏‏‏‏ لَمْ تَزِغْ بَعْدُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَجَلَسَ ثُمَّ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ أَزَاغَتِ الشَّمْسُ؟، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالُوا:‏‏‏‏ نَعَمْ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَلَمَّا قَالُوا:‏‏‏‏ قَدْ زَاغَتْ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ارْتَحَلَ ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ وَكِيعٌ:‏‏‏‏ يَعْنِي رَاحَ.

عبداللہ بن عمر رضی اللہ عنہما سے روایت ہے کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم عرفات کی وادی نمرہ میں ٹھہرتے، راوی کہتے ہیں: جب حجاج نے عبداللہ بن زبیر رضی اللہ عنہما کو قتل کیا، تو ابن عمر رضی اللہ عنہما کے پاس یہ پوچھنے کے لیے آدمی بھیجا کہ نبی اکرم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم آج کے دن کس وقت ( نماز اور خطبہ کے لیے ) نکلتے تھے؟ انہوں نے کہا: جب یہ وقت آئے گا تو ہم خود چلیں گے، حجاج نے ایک آدمی کو بھیجا کہ وہ دیکھتا رہے کہ ابن عمر رضی اللہ عنہما کب نکلتے ہیں؟ جب ابن عمر رضی اللہ عنہما نے چلنے کا ارادہ کیا، تو پوچھا: کیا سورج ڈھل گیا؟ لوگوں نے کہا: ابھی نہیں ڈھلا ہے، تو وہ بیٹھ گئے، پھر پوچھا: کیا اب ڈھل گیا؟ لوگوں نے کہا: ابھی نہیں ڈھلا ہے، پھر آپ بیٹھ گئے، پھر آپ نے کہا: کیا اب ڈھل گیا؟ لوگوں نے کہا: ہاں، تو جب لوگوں نے کہا: ہاں، تو وہ چلے۔ وکیع نے «ارتحل» کا معنی «راح» ( چلے ) بتایا ہے۔

It was narrated that ‘Ali said: “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) stopped at ‘Arafat and said: ‘This is the place of standing, and all of ‘Arafat is a place of standing.’”

It was narrated that Yazid bin Shaiban said: “We were standing in a place that was far from the place of standing. Ibn Mirba’ came to us and said: ‘I am the messenger of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) to you. He said: “Stay where you are today for today you are on the legacy of Ibrahim.’”

It was narrated from Jabir bin ‘Abdullah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “All of ‘Arafat is the place of standing, but keep away from the interior of ‘Uranah. And all of Muzdalifah is the place of standing but keep away from the interior of Muhassir. And all of Mina is the place of sacrifice, except for what is beyond ‘Aqaba.”

‘Abdullah bin Kinanah bin ‘Abbas bin Mirdas As-Sulami narrated that his father told him, from his father, that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) prayed for forgiveness for his nation one evening at ‘Arafat, and the response came: “I have forgiven them, except for the wrongdoer, with whom I will settle the score in favor of the one whom he wronged.” He said: “O Lord, if You will, then grant Paradise to the one who is wronged, and forgive the wrongdoer.” No response came (that evening).The next day at Muzdalifah he repeated the supplication, and received a response to what he asked for. He (the narrator) said: “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) laughed,” or he said, “He smiled. Abu Bakr and ‘Umar said to him: ‘May my father and mother be ransomed for you, this is not a time when you usually laugh. What made you laugh, may Allah make your years filled with laughter?’ He said: ‘The enemy of Allah, Iblis, when he came to know that Allah answered my prayer and forgiven my nation, took some dust and started to sprinkle it on his head, uttering cries of woe and doom, and what I saw of his anguish made me laugh.’”

It was narrated from Ibn Musayyab that ‘Aishah said that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “There is no day on which Allah ransoms more slaves from the Fire than the Day of ‘Arafah. He draws closer and closer, then He boasts about them before the angels and says: ‘What do these people want?’”

Sufyan bin Bukair bin ‘Ata’ said: “I heard ‘Abdur-Rahman bin Ya’mur Dili say: ‘I saw the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) when he was standing at ‘Arafat, and some people from Najd came to him and said: “O Messenger of Allah, what is Hajj?” He said: “Hajj is ‘Arafah. Whoever comes before Fajr prayer on the night of Jam’, he has completed his Hajj. The days at Mina are three. ‘But whosoever hastens to leave in two days, there is no sin on him and whosoever stays on, there is no sin on him.’” [2:203] Then he seated a man behind him on his mount and he started calling out these words.’”
